‘Pay what you want’ is a challenge to all of us. Society tells us what things cost and what their value is. We want to challenge that and when faced with the question of how much value we place on something we want you to stop and think. In every way, Chapter One is about challenging your thinking – it also happens to fund the future of Thankyou – an organisation that exists to fight global poverty. This is why we launched Chapter One with a pay-what-you-want price, which worked well for the first 4 ½ years. As at September 2020, we have raised more than $2.5m to fund the future of Thankyou. But PWYW was always intended to be simply a launch-pad, not a long-term solution. Added to this, pay-what-you-want became a bit of a logistical challenge for our team internally, adding in loads of extra manual processes that were tough to get around. So, we made the call to switch to selling the book at an RRP. It’s a win-win - our team is happy and all the profits still help fund the future!
